How important are morning routines?

Lifestyle gurus tell us they’re supremely important, and that if we ever want to unlock our true potential as a ‘productivity ninja’ we must leap out of bed at 4am to complete an intense workout, take a cold shower and extensively journal before breakfast.

But to most of us, that sounds like hell.

Despite being the kind of person who weirdly gets enjoyment from building new habits, I find it extremely tough to keep up any kind of consistency with a complicated morning routine.

So I built an incredibly simple one that takes less than 15 minutes, can be done from your bedroom and doesn’t require spending any money.

1. Drink 500ml of water.

Can you honestly say you drink enough water? Kickstart your body by getting half a litre of water in straight away, which will wake you up.

In less than 30 seconds you can tick the first thing off your list and move on to the second task of the morning with some momentum.

2. Stretch for 10 minutes.

It doesn’t have to be yoga. No mantras or cheesy instructional videos are required. Just get out of the bed, put your feet on the floor, and check where you feel stiff.

This has easily been one of the best decisions I’ve made in recent years. It gets me out of my head and into my body, warms me up by getting the blood pumping, and brings a rush of energy without a drop of caffeine.

3. Write down 3 things you want to get done that day.

Putting pen to paper sets a clear intention for the day.

By limiting our daily work task list to just 3 items we’re forced to consider what is most important to us in a time of quiet, before we open ourselves up to persuasion from others with their own agenda.

What is your morning routine?

What have you seen the most benefit from?
