Do you ever feel embarrassed telling people about your creative pursuits?

Despite being willing to gush about the films, books, music and performances we cherish, we often feel hesitant to admit that we’re attempting to pursue a similar path. We feel the pressure of a corporate society that labels creativity as a childish pursuit. We hear the voices of parents and teachers who tell us the life of an artist is to choose to starve.

But to internalise this point of view is to dramatically underestimate how the power of lateral thinking (aka creative thinking) can be applied across all areas of your life.

Creatives are the most resourceful people you’ll ever meet.

We thrive on limitation. We understand that boundaries are not just constraints but are necessary guides that force us to come up with novel solutions. We hate having our freedom restricted, but usually it’s the very thing we need in order to create something novel.

The story we carry in our head about who we are and what we do has a huge influence on the actions we take.

If we believe we are only here to solve unimportant problems we will live our life in a way that keeps us from realising our creative abilities.

We all know that resourcefulness is a vital skill for anyone seeking to carve their own path. We revere those who successfully create something from nothing, and can’t help but respect them for overcoming the roadblocks life has thrown their way. But we forget that they too have taken a long journey.

We then underestimate our own ability to overcome our personal obstacles, because we let the voices of others tell us our skills aren’t valuable.

You are a resourceful problem solver who thrives on limitation.

Never forget that.
